The memorial sits where the Johannesburg Law Courts once stood, the place where the leader practiced law from 1893 to 1914. The site later became a bus terminus before this statue was eventually installed in its current form.

The artist Tinka Christopher spent three months on this work, laboring ten hours each day to complete the piece. The monument was revealed on the leader's birthday in 2003, marking a deliberate choice of date for the unveiling.
