Southern Life Centre

The Southern Life Centre is a 30-story office tower rising 138 meters high, crowned with a distinctive glass pyramid at its peak. The structure occupies a prominent position on Commissioner Street within the city's main business district.

Construction began in 1970 under the architectural firm Monty, Sack, Nurcombe, Summerley, Ringrose and Partners. The foundation and steel framework were engineered by the specialist firm Ove Arup and Partners.

The structure reflects the architectural language of Johannesburg's business district during a period of economic expansion in the 1970s. Its distinctive glass pyramid at the top remains a recognizable landmark that shapes how locals see their downtown skyline.
