Thembisa, Township in Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, South Africa.
Thembisa is a residential area north of Kempton Park with densely built neighborhoods of houses, local shops, and community facilities spread across the landscape. The M18 road cuts through the center, connecting different sections of the township.
The area was created in 1957 as part of apartheid-era forced relocation policies, when Black families were moved from surrounding regions. Over decades the township grew into a major residential community.
The community brings together people from different South African backgrounds whose languages and daily practices shape the neighborhoods. Markets, small shops, and gathering spaces along the streets reflect this cultural mix in how residents live and interact.
The M57 route and R21 highway connect the area to surrounding cities, while Metrorail stations offer travel options within the region. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and familiarize themselves with local pathways to navigate the different sections easily.
A tornado devastated parts of the area in 2016, causing severe damage to buildings and infrastructure across neighborhoods. This event left lasting marks on the community and changed the look of entire sections.
