KwaZulu-Natal National Botanical Garden

KwaZulu-Natal National Botanical Garden is a large space that combines wild natural areas with designed planting zones, displaying plants native to eastern South Africa. The layout mixes open landscapes with cultivated sections that showcase different plant types and growing habits.

The garden was founded in 1874 by the Pietermaritzburg Botanical Society as a place to grow trees for distribution across the Natal colony. Over time it transformed into a preserve for the region's plant diversity.

The Useful Plants Section displays species that local people have traditionally used for healing and everyday needs. You can see how plants have been woven into the daily lives and knowledge of the region.

The garden is located in Pietermaritzburg and is easy to reach with paths leading through different zones. Wear comfortable shoes as the terrain is hilly and you will walk longer distances to explore the whole area.

The garden is a haven for birdwatchers with more than 180 recorded bird species living on the grounds. Specific areas are deliberately designed to attract different bird types, making it a rewarding place for nature watching.
