University of KwaZulu-Natal Botanical Garden, Botanical garden at University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
The University of KwaZulu-Natal Botanical Garden spans several hectares and features collections of Clivia, Gerbera, Kniphofia, and Watsonia plant species. Walking trails connect different sections, allowing visitors to move through the various plant areas at their own pace.
The garden was established in 1983 as a research facility dedicated to studying and preserving indigenous plants from the eastern grasslands of South Africa. It grew out of the university's interest in protecting local plant species.
A Zulu demonstration area within the garden displays how local communities traditionally used plants and practiced agriculture in the region. This section offers insights into the everyday relationship between people and the plants around them.
Wear comfortable shoes as the walking trails cover varying elevations throughout the grounds. Information desks are available on-site to help with orientation, and guided tours can be arranged for those wanting deeper knowledge about the plant collections.
The garden features a dedicated insect hotel providing habitat for numerous invertebrate species. This structure supports insects while also attracting around 150 bird species that visit the grounds.
