Juma Mosque, Islamic prayer center in central Durban, South Africa
The Juma Mosque features gilt-domed minarets rising above the commercial district, with a large marbled worship hall accommodating thousands of worshippers.
Established in 1881 on Grey Street with a modest brick building, the mosque underwent substantial reconstruction in 1927 following designs by Payne & Payne architects.
The mosque stands near the Victoria Street Market and Madressa Arcade bazaar, creating a center for Islamic worship within Durban's Indian quarter.
Visitors can access the mosque from Monday to Friday between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM, and on Saturday mornings from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM.
The mosque maintained its status as the largest Islamic place of worship in the Southern hemisphere until the late 1970s, with a capacity for 7,000 people.
