Juma Mosque

The Juma Mosque is a prayer house topped with gilt-domed cupolas and minarets that rise prominently above the commercial district. Inside, a large worship hall finished in marble accommodates thousands of worshippers at a time.

This mosque was founded in 1881 on Grey Street as a simple brick structure. It underwent major reconstruction in 1927 when architects Payne & Payne designed its current impressive form.

This mosque serves as a gathering place for the Islamic community in Durban's Indian quarter, standing near the Victoria Street Market and local bazaars. It functions as a social and spiritual hub where worshippers from across the city come together.
