Springside Nature Reserve

Springside Nature Reserve is a protected area in Hillcrest that covers about 21 hectares with forests, grasslands, wetlands, and a stream running through it. The property features two marked walking trails called the Umdoni and Protea paths, along with picnic spots that have tables and braai facilities.

The reserve was established in 1948 as a joint effort between the Wildlife Society and the Hillcrest town board to protect local ecosystems. This early conservation work helped ensure that the area's plant and animal diversity would be preserved for the future.

The reserve runs an education center where local children learn about native animals and plants through hands-on programs. These activities help young people develop a deeper connection with the natural world around them.

Wear comfortable shoes since the two trails have different difficulty levels and pass through various habitats. It is wise to bring water and sun protection, especially when walking through open grasslands and areas without tree cover.

The property contains an interactive sundial where visitors can stand on marked calendar positions and their shadows show the current time. This hands-on feature blends science and astronomy with nature exploration in a playful way.
