Umgeni Steam Railway, Heritage railway line in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
The Umgeni Steam Railway operates train journeys between Kloof and Inchanga on a line featuring steep gradients through valleys and indigenous forests of KwaZulu-Natal. The railway runs monthly excursion services from Inchanga to Bothas Hill, with additional trips departing from Pietermaritzburg to Nottingham Road using steam-powered locomotives.
The line was constructed in the 1880s to link Durban and Pietermaritzburg, with a notable 53-meter tunnel at Drummond completed in 1878. The railway preserves this heritage by restoring and operating locomotives from the same era, keeping the region's railway legacy alive for visitors.
The railway museum at Inchanga, housed in the former Station Master's residence, displays exhibitions about South African railway history on operating train days. The space tells the story of how trains shaped the region's connection between towns and communities.
Train services operate on specific weekends and require advance planning since operating days are limited and scheduled seasonally. Visitors should prepare for a mountainous route passing through dense forests, so comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear are recommended for the journey.
The locomotive fleet includes rare steam engines such as an 1892 Class A model and several Garratt machines, all carefully maintained by dedicated volunteers. These machines represent uncommon designs that have largely disappeared from other parts of the world.
