Port Maputo sits on the north side of Espírito Santo bay and provides berths for many ships to load and unload cargo. The waterfront spans several kilometers with various basins and docking areas designed for different types of goods.
A Portuguese seafarer established a trading post here in 1544 that grew into an important harbor over the following centuries. Permanent facilities and docks were built starting in 1850 to handle larger volumes of goods.
