Port Maputo, Commercial port in KaMpfumo district, Mozambique
Port Maputo sits on the north side of Espírito Santo bay and provides berths for many ships to load and unload cargo. The waterfront spans several kilometers with various basins and docking areas designed for different types of goods.
A Portuguese seafarer established a trading post here in 1544 that grew into an important harbor over the following centuries. Permanent facilities and docks were built starting in 1850 to handle larger volumes of goods.
The port represents Maputo's role as a regional trade hub where ships from different nations arrive and depart regularly. The daily operations demonstrate how essential this location is for Mozambique's economic connections with the surrounding region.
The port connects by rail to nearby countries, making it easy for goods to arrive or leave by train. Road access via major highways also allows cargo to enter or exit by truck.
The port has specialized cooling rooms where large quantities of citrus fruits are stored before being shipped worldwide. These facilities allow thousands of tons of fresh fruit to be held at one time.
