Chavuma Falls

Chavuma Falls, Waterfall on the Zambezi River in Northwestern Province, Zambia.

Chavuma Falls is a sequence of cascades along the Zambezi River that becomes more visible when water levels drop during the dry season. The rock formations create a series of drops that break the river's flow into multiple steps.

These falls have kept their natural form for many centuries and have long been a known point along the traditional routes of local communities. The river itself has always been a lifeline for people living in this region.

Local fishermen come to these falls during specific seasons to practice fishing methods that have been handed down through generations. This work shapes how people live with and depend on the river and its natural rhythms.

Getting there requires traveling through rural paths, with the best time to visit between July and October when water levels are lower. During these months the falls are most visible and the paths are easier to navigate.

The falls contribute to creating fertile floodplains that gradually transition into the sand-covered lands of the Barotse Plain. These transitional zones support life far beyond the falls themselves.
