Chavuma Falls, Waterfall on the Zambezi River in Northwestern Province, Zambia.

Chavuma Falls is a waterfall on the Zambezi River, located in Chavuma District in Northwestern Province, Zambia, where the river passes through a series of rocky outcrops that break its flow into stepped drops. The width and visibility of the cascades change noticeably depending on the season.

For centuries, the falls served as a known landmark along the traditional routes used by local communities traveling through this part of the Zambezi basin. The river crossing near the rocky drops was a natural reference point for movement and settlement in the region.

Local fishermen gather near the rocky drops to fish using methods passed down through generations, often working from the banks or shallow sections exposed at low water. The river shapes daily life in the nearby villages in a very direct way.

The site sits in a rural area and can only be reached via unpaved tracks, which are much easier to navigate during the dry season between July and October. Visiting during those months also gives the best view of the exposed rocks and drops.

The falls sit very close to the point where the Zambezi crosses from Angola into Zambia, making them one of the few visible natural markers near an international river border. This position means the water rushing over the rocks has just entered Zambian territory.
