Northwestern Province, Administrative division in northern Zambia
Northwestern Province stretches across a large area between Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and divides into eleven administrative districts. The region contains several nature reserves and multiple airports, including Zambezi, Solwezi, and Kalumbila, connecting the different areas.
The province developed from administrative boundaries drawn during the colonial period. Since then, the region has undergone profound demographic change that shaped its development and composition.
The Luvale and Luchazi communities shape cultural life through festivals like Likumbi Lya Mize in Zambezi and the Chivweka ceremony in July. These traditions appear in music, dances, and gatherings that structure the social life of the region.
The region is accessible through several airports and has connections between the different districts. Visitors should plan flexibly, as infrastructure in remote areas can be limited.
The region is shaped by rainfall patterns and farming practices that differ from other parts of Zambia. These climatic conditions directly influence how communities live and work.
