Sioma Ngwezi National Park, National park in southwestern Zambia.
Sioma Ngwezi National Park is located in southwestern Zambia between the Zambezi and Cuando Rivers, featuring sand dunes, seasonal lagoons, and open plains. The landscape appears gently rolling and expansive, shaped by dry conditions and wind-carved dune formations.
The region emerged as part of the Kalahari Desert, with wind creating the dune formations that define the landscape today. The area became a protected park to conserve both the terrain and the wildlife populations that depend on it.
The park functions as a wildlife corridor linking protected areas across borders, allowing animals to follow their natural seasonal movement patterns. Visitors experience this connection when encountering animals moving through the landscape as part of their established routes.
Visiting requires four-wheel drive vehicles, as no paved roads exist and the terrain demands high clearance. It is wise to bring plenty of water, provisions, and navigation aids since infrastructure is limited throughout the park.
During rainy seasons, hundreds of small lagoons form between the dunes, creating temporary water sources that become gathering places for large herds. These seasonal pools transform the dry landscape into zones of concentrated animal activity that visitors can observe.
