Upemba National Park, National park in Haut-Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo
Upemba National Park is a protected area in southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo that encompasses mountains, wetlands, lakes, and grasslands across a vast territory. The park integrates multiple landscape types within its boundaries, creating varied habitats for wildlife.
The park was established in 1939 and initially represented one of Africa's largest protected areas. Since its creation, its focus has centered on safeguarding these landscapes and their inhabitants.
Local rangers and civil personnel work together with surrounding communities to protect wildlife while supporting sustainable farming practices through the AGRIFOOD Project.
The best visiting period depends on water levels, which reach their highest between March and June. During the dry season from October to January, expect significantly lower water levels throughout the park.
The lake within the park is exceptionally shallow and contains extensive papyrus swamps supporting remarkable fish diversity. These wetland areas form a specialized ecosystem that many visitors overlook.
