Siaya County, Administrative division in western Kenya
Siaya County is an administrative region in western Kenya spanning 2,496 square kilometers along Lake Victoria. The area consists of six sub-counties: Alego Usonga, Bondo, Gem, Rarieda, Ugenya, and Ugunja, which together form this administrative division.
The region became an independent administrative unit after Kenya's constitutional reform in 2010, when governance authority transferred from the former Nyanza Province to newly established counties. This restructuring was part of a broader decentralization of the country's administrative structure.
The Luo people who live here maintain traditional practices that shape daily life, with fish from Lake Victoria playing a central role in local cooking and family meals. These customs remain visible in how communities gather, celebrate, and share food together throughout the region.
Siaya Town serves as the administrative center, while Bondo functions as the largest urban hub and both are connected through major roads to neighboring regions. Visitors can find main services and connections at these points to explore different parts of the area.
The area sits directly along Lake Victoria, giving visitors the experience of being near one of the world's largest freshwater lakes. This lakeside location fundamentally shapes the local economy, food sources, and daily activities of people throughout the region.
