Kisumu Impala Sanctuary

Kisumu Impala Sanctuary is a small protected area on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya, featuring walking paths through different habitats. The trails move through grassland and reach down to the lake where visitors can encounter wildlife in their natural surroundings.

Protection was established in 1992 after impalas faced threats from human settlement near an important railway line. This action became necessary to safeguard these animals as their natural habitat shrank.

The sanctuary serves as a place where the local community connects with nature through annual events that celebrate wildlife protection. These gatherings reflect how animals and conservation have become woven into the region's sense of community and shared purpose.

The sanctuary is open daily from morning until evening and accepts multiple payment methods at the entrance. Visitors should come prepared with good walking shoes and allow enough time to explore the trails at a comfortable pace.

The sanctuary runs an animal orphanage that cares for rare Sitatunga antelopes, a species found in few other places in the region. This hands-on work with orphaned animals shows the everyday reality of conservation efforts happening on the ground.
