Sipi Falls, Three-tiered waterfall system near Mount Elgon, Uganda
Sipi Falls is a three-tiered waterfall system near Mount Elgon with cascades dropping 95, 74, and 85 meters, offering views across the Karamoja plains. Forested slopes frame the falls and create a natural amphitheater setting.
The name comes from the Sebei word 'sep', referring to a medicinal plant that grows along the river banks. This plant was traditionally used to treat fevers and has given the place its identity.
The Sebei people farm coffee plantations in the surrounding area, growing high-quality Arabica beans that have been part of their way of life for generations. This farming tradition shapes the landscape around the falls in a way visitors can easily notice.
The falls lie around 273 kilometers northeast of Kampala and are best visited during the dry season from December to February. Visitors should drive and allow time for walking to the base of the waterfalls.
At Chebonet Falls, part of this waterfall system, visitors can abseil down the cliffs and view the cascades from different angles as they descend. This activity offers an experience that most travelers overlook.
