Mount Moroto, Extinct volcano in Moroto District, Uganda.
Mount Moroto is an extinct volcano in Uganda that reaches approximately 3,000 meters in elevation. It forms part of a volcanic chain that runs along Uganda's border with Kenya within the Great Rift Valley.
The name comes from the Ethiopian word 'Moru To', meaning western mountain, which was given by migrating tribes who passed through the region. This naming reflects the historical importance of this area as a migration route.
The Tepeth people inhabit the slopes and keep herds of cattle that move across the ridges throughout the year. Their settlements and animal enclosures form a visible network across the mountainside.
The trek typically takes about three days and requires good fitness levels along with proper hiking gear and plenty of water. It is helpful to hire a local guide who knows the route and can provide information about trail conditions.
Natural springs on the mountainside feed streams that local communities use for irrigation and daily water needs. These water sources support agricultural projects that teach sustainable farming methods to residents.
