New Jinja Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Njeru, Uganda
The New Jinja Bridge is a cable-stayed steel structure spanning 525 meters across the Victoria Nile, connecting Jinja and Njeru. The single-plane cable design supports vehicles traveling on the Northern Corridor highway, serving as a major transportation link between East and Central Africa.
The structure opened in October 2018, replacing the original Nalubaale Bridge that had served the crossing since 1954. Construction began in 2014 and represented a major upgrade to regional transportation links.
The bridge construction involved cooperation between Uganda and international partners, with Japanese and South Korean companies leading the engineering work.
The structure carries vehicles on the Northern Corridor highway linking the Indian Ocean to Central Africa. Visitors traveling across will experience steady traffic flow and should allow time for vehicle movement during peak hours.
The bridge was designed by Japanese and South Korean engineers and is projected to last 120 years. This international engineering collaboration and extended lifespan reflect a significant infrastructure investment for the region.
