Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine

Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine is a large white stone church near Lake Victoria with contemporary architecture featuring spacious windows and multiple entrances. The interior can hold around 1,600 worshippers and offers different areas for prayer and religious gatherings.

Three Christian leaders were executed at this location in 1886 by order of the king, marking the start of persecution against Uganda's martyrs. The shrine was later built to remember this event and honor those who gave their lives for their faith.

The shrine honors those killed for their faith through prayer spaces and memorials that blend Catholic worship with Ugandan remembrance. Visitors encounter symbols throughout the grounds that connect religious devotion to local history.

The site is easily accessible with plenty of space to explore the church and memorial areas on foot. It is best to wear comfortable shoes as you will walk around the grounds and buildings.

A sacred baptismal site inside the building marks where several of the deceased were baptized before their execution. This spot remains a focus of prayer and reflection for pilgrims visiting the shrine today.
