Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine, Catholic shrine in Munyonyo district, Kampala, Uganda
The white stone basilica rises near Lake Victoria, accommodating 1,600 worshippers within its contemporary architectural design featuring large windows and multiple entrances.
King Mwanga II ordered the execution of three Christian leaders at this location on May 26, 1886, marking the beginning of the Uganda Martyrs' persecution.
The shrine incorporates both Catholic traditions and Ugandan heritage through its design elements, religious ceremonies, and memorial spaces dedicated to local martyrs.
Daily masses occur at 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM, while Sunday services are held in Luganda and English at various times throughout the day.
The basilica contains a sacred baptismal site where Saint Charles Lwanga baptized several martyrs before their execution, including Saint Kizito and Saint Muggaga.
