Luzira Maximum Security Prison

The facility spans multiple sections including Luzira Upper Prison, Murchison Bay Prison, and Kampala Remand Prison within southeastern Kampala, 10 kilometers from downtown.

Archaeological excavations at the prison site revealed artifacts from 1000 AD, including the notable Luzira Head currently displayed at the British Museum.

The prison maintains a library of 7,000 books and encourages education through carpentry training programs where inmates teach their acquired skills to others.

Originally constructed for 1,700 inmates, the facility now accommodates nearly 8,000 people, with separate sections for male and female prisoners.

Inmates participate in their own sustenance by growing, harvesting, preparing, and distributing food throughout the prison complex.
