Bujagali Falls, Waterfall system near Jinja, Uganda
Bujagali Falls is a rapids system on the Nile River close to the town of Jinja in Uganda, where fast-moving water pushes through rocky channels. The site sits along an open stretch of riverbank lined with trees, and the churning water is visible from the shore.
Before 2011, the site was known for a natural waterfall that shaped this section of the Nile near Jinja. The construction of a hydroelectric dam redirected much of the water flow and changed the look of the place permanently.
A traditional guardian of the site still performs ritual ceremonies on the riverbank, continuing a lineage that local communities trace back many generations. For people living nearby, this stretch of the Nile carries a meaning that goes well beyond the water itself.
Guided whitewater rafting trips run directly from the site and are open to people with no prior experience. It helps to bring clothes that can get wet, as staying dry during the trips is not really possible.
Downstream from Bujagali, a long corridor of rapids continues for many kilometers, with sections ranging from gentle to very rough water. This means paddlers can string together several runs in a single day without ever leaving the river.
