Mabira Forest, Forest reserve in Buikwe District, Uganda
Mabira Forest is a protected rainforest reserve and National Cultural Site of Uganda located in Buikwe District, east of Kampala. It features a dense canopy, natural streams, and a network of trails that pass through a range of plant and animal habitats.
The area was first used for rubber cultivation in the early 1900s, before commercial activity shifted to coffee. Over time it was placed under government protection and designated as a forest reserve.
Mabira is considered a sacred place by surrounding communities, who have long relied on its plants for traditional medicine. Local guides along the trails can point out specific trees and herbs that are still used in everyday healing practices today.
The dry season is the best time to visit, when the trails are easier to walk and wildlife is more visible. Sturdy footwear and light rain protection are worth bringing regardless of season, as the ground can stay damp even without rain.
Mabira is home to over 300 butterfly species, making it one of the richest areas for butterflies in East Africa. Many of them are found nowhere else and are easiest to spot in the early morning hours along the forest edges.
