Mount Homa, Carbonatite volcano in Homa Bay County, Kenya.
Mount Homa is a carbonatite volcano in Homa Bay County that rises 1,751 meters above sea level and forms a broad peninsula on the southern shore of Lake Victoria's Winam Gulf. The mountain has a flat-topped summit reached by multiple hiking paths that wind through the landscape.
Mount Homa formed through volcanic activity that shaped the landscape and shoreline of Lake Victoria. Nearby archaeological sites like Kanjera show that people have lived in this region for at least 2 million years, leaving behind early tools and evidence of early human presence.
The Luo community calls this mountain Got Uma or God Marahuma, reflecting its importance in their local traditions and regional stories. The name shows how deeply connected the people are to this landmark and what it means in their daily understanding of the land.
Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, especially if hiking the longer trails to the summit. Morning visits offer the best visibility across Lake Victoria, so plan accordingly for clear views.
This mountain is one of only two places on Earth where cold lava erupts - a rare geological phenomenon shared with Tanzania's Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. This unusual composition makes the site particularly valuable to geologists and volcano researchers worldwide.
