Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park is a protected area in the Great Rift Valley featuring a shallow alkaline lake, woodlands, and grasslands that support diverse wildlife. The park encompasses different ecosystems within its boundaries.

The park was established in 1967 and became Kenya's first rhino sanctuary. It developed into an important place for protecting both black and white rhinoceros populations.

The name Nakuru comes from the Maasai language and refers to the dry, dusty character of the land. Visitors can see today how this name reflects the open, arid landscape that defines the area.

The park can be entered from three different gates, each with different fee structures for visitors. It is wise to check current conditions before planning your visit.

The lake's alkaline waters allow algae to grow abundantly, which flamingos feed on as their primary food source. These special conditions make the park a prime location for observing these pink birds.
