Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley, Natural lake system in Great Rift Valley, Kenya.

The Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley includes three alkaline lakes framed by steep rock walls and volcanic hills. The mineral-rich waters shimmer in shades of green, while hot springs send steam into the air at several shorelines.

The three lakes formed through volcanic activity along the rift several million years ago. Archaeologists have found tools and bones of early hominids in the sediment layers, marking the area as an important site for human development.

The alkaline lakes have drawn pastoral communities for centuries, who use the water for livestock and ritual purposes. Some sacred sites along the shore still serve as places for ceremonies where elders seek blessings for rain and good harvests.

Each lake has viewing points along access roads where you can watch birds and other animals. The paths vary from flat ground to steep slopes, so wear sturdy shoes and bring water.

Geysers at Lake Bogoria shoot boiling water several meters high and create mist across the surface. In some spots you can smell the sulfur from a distance before you even see the bubbling springs.
