Ol Doinyo Eburru, Active volcanic complex in Great Rift Valley, Kenya
Ol Doinyo Eburru is a volcanic massif in the Great Rift Valley that rises nearly 980 meters (3,215 feet) above the rift floor to reach 2,856 meters (9,370 feet) in elevation. The complex features more than fifty craters and domes distributed across its landscape.
The massif developed through multiple volcanic phases that created its current structure with diverse craters and lava formations. The Eburru complex evolved over extended geological periods as different types of volcanic activity shaped the region.
The region supports diverse wildlife populations and maintains strong connections to local communities who benefit from its geothermal energy resources.
The site is accessible by multiple routes and can be visited at various times of day, allowing for flexible planning. Visitors should prepare for the elevation and bring appropriate gear for the terrain.
The eastern side displays trachytic tuff formations, while the western section contains extensive pumice deposits. These different compositions reveal distinct phases of volcanic activity.
