Karen Blixen Museum, Colonial museum at foot of Ngong Hills, Nairobi, Kenya.
The Karen Blixen Museum sits in a 1912 bungalow at the foot of the Ngong Hills in Nairobi and displays furnishings and personal items from the colonial period. The garden surrounding the building leads through native forest and offers views of the nearby mountains.
Danish author Karen Blixen ran a coffee plantation at this site from 1917 to 1931 before returning to Denmark after financial troubles. The property was later converted into a museum and preserves the memory of her years in Kenya.
The house shows how European settlers lived on a coffee plantation in the early 20th century, with furniture and objects from that time. Visitors see the rooms arranged as they were during the plantation years and learn how daily life was organized between farming and household routines.
Visitors can join daily guided tours from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM that lead through the rooms and garden. A shop on site sells crafts and books about the region.
The film Out of Africa, based on Blixen's memoir, made the property known worldwide and brought many visitors here. Some scenes were shot directly at this location and show the rooms and surrounding landscape.
