Thomson's Falls, Waterfall on Ewaso Ng'iro River in Laikipia West, Kenya
Thomson's Falls is a waterfall on the Ewaso Ng'iro River in Laikipia West that drops 74 meters from a cliff edge. The water crashes down into a deep gorge lined with thick green vegetation on both sides.
The waterfall was discovered in 1883 by Scottish geologist Joseph Thomson during his expedition through East Africa. His visit brought attention to the area and led to the growth of nearby Nyahururu town.
The falls serve as a natural gathering place where local people come for water and community activities. The landscape around it remains woven into daily routines and seasonal practices of those living nearby.
You can reach the falls by walking designated paths from Nyahururu town, and local guides are available to show you different viewing points. Visit during or just after the rainy seasons to see the water flow at its fullest.
The falls sit at about 2.360 meters above sea level, making them one of the highest altitude waterfalls near the equator in Africa. This remarkable elevation creates a unique climate and plant life that differs noticeably from lower altitude areas nearby.
