Lord Egerton Castle, Colonial estate in Nakuru, Kenya
Lord Egerton Castle is a manor house built in Tudor style with high ceilings, solid stone walls, grand halls, and several towers spread across three floors. The building contains numerous rooms and is surrounded by gardens that you can explore.
The castle was constructed between 1938 and 1954 by Lord Maurice Egerton, a British nobleman who arrived in Kenya during the colonial era. The long building period reflects the scale of the project and the commitment required to complete it.
The rooms display period furnishings, hunting trophies, and historical photographs that show how British settlers lived alongside Kenyan communities during the colonial era. These objects tell the story of two worlds that shared the same space.
The site is open to visitors daily, and guided tours in multiple languages help explain the architecture and collections inside. The surrounding gardens are part of the experience and provide space to walk around and rest.
According to local accounts, the castle was expanded after a personal setback to display wealth and social standing. This expansion transformed it into one of the most distinctive buildings in the region.
