Chemin Crémont, Historical path between La Possession and Saint-Denis, Réunion.
Chemin Crémont is a historic walking route linking La Possession and Saint-Denis on Réunion island. The path follows the northwestern coast while traversing significant elevation changes through the landscape.
The path was constructed between 1730 and 1732. It later gained military importance when British forces used it to land at Grande Chaloupe in 1810.
The path is named after Honoré de Crémont, a notable administrator who shaped the region during the 1700s. Locals and visitors use this route as a meaningful connection between two communities, linking their daily worlds and shared landscape.
The hike takes roughly two and a half hours and involves notable climbs and descents throughout. Sturdy footwear and water are essential, especially since the route crosses ravines and exposed sections.
The path is paved with volcanic basalt that reveals the technical skill of its 18th-century builders. It crosses several deep ravines including Ravine à Malheur and Ravine de La Petite Chaloupe, creating memorable passages through the landscape.
