United Nations Office at Nairobi, UN headquarters in Gigiri, Kenya
The United Nations Office at Nairobi is the largest UN facility in Africa, located next to Karura Forest in the Gigiri district. The campus includes several administrative buildings, conference rooms, and a central plaza connected by landscaped green spaces and walkways.
The facility opened in the late 1970s and gradually expanded to become the UN's African headquarters. Major additions followed in the 1990s, including new administrative buildings and meeting rooms.
The main building displays public artworks by African artists alongside a visitor exhibition space linking local communities and environmental projects. Guided tours pass through the conference hall where regional delegations meet to discuss development and security matters.
Interested visitors can book guided tours in advance to see the campus and selected conference rooms. Registration is done online or by phone, and a valid ID document must be presented at the entrance.
The campus features a pathway leading into the adjacent Karura Forest that shelters bats and over a hundred bird species. This green corridor is also used by staff during breaks to unwind.
