Haller Park

Haller Park is a nature reserve in Bamburi, Mombasa County, covering approximately 75 hectares with a range of different habitats. It is home to hippos, giraffes, buffalos, and crocodiles, along with several fish ponds set within eucalyptus groves.

A Swiss naturalist, Dr. Rene Haller, converted this former limestone quarry into a green sanctuary starting in the 1970s. He carefully introduced various plant species to demonstrate that industrial sites could be transformed into thriving natural areas.

The park functions as a place where visitors learn about environmental restoration and how damaged land can be brought back to life. Daily guided tours demonstrate conservation practices and show the connection between human action and nature's recovery.

The park is located about 12 kilometers north of Mombasa and welcomes visitors daily. Guided tours in multiple languages help you explore the different areas and see the animals comfortably.

What makes this place remarkable is that it grew from an abandoned limestone quarry, a former industrial site with deep pits and excavations. The United Nations recognized this transformation as an outstanding example of how a scarred landscape can become a living ecosystem again.
