Nguuni Nature Sanctuary

Nguuni Nature Sanctuary, Nature sanctuary in Mtopanga ward, Kenya

Description

The Nguuni Nature Sanctuary covers the Nguu Tatu Hills and contains Acacia woodlands where giraffes, ostriches, oryx, and elands live in their natural setting. The grounds feature different areas to explore, with an Education Centre serving as the main hub for visitors.

History

This area was once abandoned land damaged by industrial activities before conservation efforts by the Baobab Trust transformed it into a restored natural habitat. The rehabilitation work gradually regenerated the ecosystem over time.

Culture

The Education Centre here works closely with local schools, giving children from the surrounding area chances to learn about nature and wildlife firsthand. You can see school groups visiting regularly to spend time outdoors and observe animals in their habitat.

Practical

The sanctuary is open daily, with separate pricing for local residents and outside visitors. The Education Centre provides a good starting point for exploring the different areas of the grounds.

Did you know?

A notable Rothschild giraffe named Sir Willy lived in the sanctuary from 2004 to 2010 and fathered eleven offspring while there. This animal played an important role in the breeding success and left a lasting mark on the giraffe population.
