Quaranup, Heritage quarantine facility in Princess Royal Harbour, Australia
Quaranup is a former quarantine complex at Princess Royal Harbour with 17 stone and timber buildings arranged along the shoreline. The layout includes residential quarters, office spaces, and medical facilities that together formed the health infrastructure for ships arriving at the port.
The site was founded in 1875 to check ships arriving at Albany Harbour and the diseases they might carry. It started as a simple caretaker's cottage and jetty, then grew into a larger complex with medical and support buildings.
The place shows how people dealt with quarantine and health protection across different times. The buildings tell the story of an era when arriving ships brought real concerns about disease.
The site sits right on the water with views over the port, making it easy to find your way around. Visitors can walk through the buildings and see the historic waterfront, but should check in advance what activities or access are available.
A separate powder magazine on a nearby island stored ammunition while the main complex focused on ships. This arrangement shows how safety and health concerns were organized separately in that era.
