Lobang Jepang, World War II tunnel complex in Padang, Indonesia
Lobang Jepang is an underground tunnel complex from World War II located in Bukittinggi. The network stretches roughly 1400 meters in length and about 2 meters in width, featuring multiple connected corridors and specialized chambers throughout the structure.
This underground network was built between 1942 and 1945 during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia as a defensive installation. Military forces used the tunnels for weapon storage and strategic operations in this region.
Workers from different islands across the archipelago were brought together for this massive digging project. Today, the tunnels tell the story of how people from distant regions came together during that era.
Access to the complex is available through several entrance points near Ngarai Sianok, Taman Panorama, and Bukittinggi Zoo areas. Visitors can explore the tunnels but should bring good lighting and wear sturdy shoes for comfortable navigation.
The tunnel walls display exceptional craftsmanship, as the soil composition becomes more solid when mixed with water, contributing to its durability through earthquakes. This natural reinforcement has helped the system survive across decades.
