Goedang Ransoem Museum, History museum in Sawahlunto, Indonesia
The Goedang Ransoem Museum occupies a complex with two warehouse buildings and a large cooking facility built by Germans in 1894. The system was designed to prepare food on a massive scale.
The Dutch colonial government built this facility in 1918 as a central kitchen to feed thousands of coal miners. It was a key part of the mining operation infrastructure.
The museum displays items and photographs that show how forced laborers and kitchen staff lived and worked during colonial times. Visitors can see the reality of daily life in those years.
The site is easy to walk through with clear access to the different areas. A visit usually takes about two to three hours to see all the exhibits and the grounds.
The cooking facility used an underground pipe system connecting to 20 furnaces that could handle enormous quantities of rice at once. This impressive heating and distribution network was quite advanced for its time.
