Lake Richmond

Lake Richmond is a freshwater lake near the southern coast of Western Australia ringed by native bushland in varying densities. The water body spans approximately 77 hectares, with depths reaching 15 meters in some sections.

The lake formed about 4000 years ago when coastal changes separated it from Cockburn Sound, creating an isolated freshwater system. This separation led to the development of a distinct aquatic environment over centuries.

The lake holds deep meaning for the Ninyar people, whose cultural connections to this place are reflected in local names and stories passed down over generations. Today, visitors can see how this heritage shapes efforts to protect and respect the site.

The Anne Mueller Environmental Walk loops around the lake for about 3 kilometers with entry points at multiple road access areas. Wear sturdy footwear and come prepared for changing weather conditions typical of coastal areas.

The water body contains about three hectares of thrombolites, rare microbial structures representing some of Earth's oldest life forms. These living fossils exist at only a handful of locations worldwide.
