Bathurst Lighthouse, Navigation lighthouse on Bathurst Point, Rottnest Island, Australia.
Bathurst Lighthouse is a navigation tower on Rottnest Island built from limestone, rising about 19 meters tall. It has a cone shape and wears a gold lantern dome at the top, watching over Kingston Reef.
The lighthouse was built in 1900 after several shipwrecks, including the City of York disaster in 1899 that killed many people. The light equipment used here originally came from another location but was repurposed to make these dangerous waters safer.
The lighthouse shows how maritime safety evolved over time, moving from people tending kerosene lamps to automatic solar systems. Visitors can see how the technology adapted to serve ships navigating these waters.
You get to the lighthouse by taking a ferry from Perth to Rottnest Island, then walking or cycling on marked trails. Plan to spend time on the pathways and be ready for changing weather conditions on the island.
This tower works as the back light in a pair of lighthouses that guide ships through Kingston Reef using two towers together. Every 16 seconds it sends four clear flashes to help sailors find the safe channel.
