Wadjemup Lighthouse, Limestone lighthouse on Rottnest Island, Australia.
Description
Wadjemup Lighthouse is a limestone tower rising above the highest point of Rottnest Island. The structure features an observation platform and a rotating light beam that reaches far across the ocean on clear nights.
History
The original structure was built in 1849, then replaced in 1896 by the current building. Both versions served as important navigation aids that helped make Western Australian waters safer for ships.
Culture
The name comes from the Noongar language and means "Island of happiness". Visitors today can understand this place's ongoing importance to the local Aboriginal people through information shared at the site.
Practical
Visitors can climb stairs during guided tours to reach the observation platform and enjoy views across the Indian Ocean and island. It is best to wear comfortable shoes and allow time for the visit, as the vista rewards the effort.
Did you know?
The beacon originally burned coconut oil, later switched to kerosene, and finally converted to electricity in 1986. These changes show how maritime technology evolved over more than a century on this remote island.
