The Orient Hotel occupies a prominent corner position at High and Henry Streets, displaying Federation Academic Classical architecture spread across three stories. The building maintains its original design elements that characterize the West End streetscape.
Michael Cavanagh designed this hotel building in 1902 to replace The Commercial Inn, which operated on this corner from 1849 through the early 1900s. The new construction reflected the growing demand for larger accommodation in the rapidly developing port city.
The building serves as a social hub where locals and visitors gather for live entertainment and casual meetings throughout the week. Its role as a community gathering space has remained central to the West End neighbourhood since its construction.
