Cygnet Cinema, Art Deco movie theater in South Perth, Australia
Cygnet Cinema is an Art Deco movie theater in South Perth featuring geometric forms and a central tower. The building was originally designed to accommodate both an indoor auditorium and an outdoor garden screening area, and today shows films in various formats including 16mm, 35mm, and 70mm.
The building opened in March 1938 as the Como Theatre, commissioned by entrepreneur James Stiles and designed by architect William Leighton. It emerged during Perth's early cinema boom and retained its original architectural character through the decades.
The cinema screens independent films, classic movies, and special programs with film festivals and audience discussions throughout the year. It serves as a gathering place where film enthusiasts can engage with each other and discover diverse cinema.
The cinema is located at Preston Street in Como and provides parking facilities for visitors. It is easily accessible by car and offers good amenities for a comfortable viewing experience.
A large portrait of Alfred Hitchcock painted by street artist Nils Westergard has decorated the external wall since 2013. This mural is a popular photo spot for visitors and adds a cinematic touch to the building's exterior.
