Buckland Hill Reservoir
Buckland Hill Reservoir is a large, covered water tank built on a limestone ridge in Mosman Park with views over the Swan River mouth. The structure was completed in 1925 and expanded in 1935 to supply water to surrounding neighborhoods.
The site began as a wooden beacon in 1850 to help ships navigate the coast. When the reservoir was built in 1925, an 1875 stone obelisk became surrounded by water and was relocated when a roof was added to the tank in 1983.
The reservoir sits on a limestone hill and has shaped how the local community managed its water supply for nearly a century. Visitors can see how practical engineering connected the area's needs with the natural landscape around it.
The site is easily reached by bus lines 998 and 999 or by the Fremantle train line, with the nearest stop at Swanbourne Station about a 16-minute walk away. From the McCabe Street bus stop, the walk takes just four minutes.
The Republic Speed Truck became the first vehicle to reach the hilltop in 1924, managing the steep slope before modern roads existed. This event marks how the location shifted from a simple navigation point to a center of modern infrastructure.
