Karrakatta Cemetery, Cemetery in City of Nedlands, Australia.
Karrakatta Cemetery is a heritage burial ground in the City of Nedlands, Australia, with traditional graves, lawn sections and mausoleums across landscaped grounds. The site includes several areas such as a keeping place for indigenous remains and memorials from different communities.
The burial ground opened in 1899 to serve the growing communities in the west of the continent. From 1970 onward, a redevelopment began to reuse existing areas and create additional space.
The name comes from a local Noongar language expression and reflects the connection to the original land. Visitors today see burial grounds from different faiths side by side, showing the diversity of people in Western Australia.
Visitors find burial registers and location maps in metal cabinets on the grounds, helping with the search for specific graves. The extensive pathways allow for quiet walks and provide access to all areas.
A renewal system transforms older grave sites into new pathways and memorial areas, allowing the grounds to be reused over time. More than 300,000 memorials document over a century of burials and family stories from the region.
