Swanbourne Hospital, Heritage listed former mental hospital in Mount Claremont, Australia.
Swanbourne Hospital is a former psychiatric facility sprawling across 395 acres with preserved administrative buildings, Montgomery Hall, and several staff residential blocks built in 1904. The complex was divided into separate sections that once housed male and female patient wards.
The facility opened in 1904 as Claremont Hospital for the Insane and became Western Australia's primary psychiatric center for long-term patients until 1972. During World War II, portions were adapted for military use, and in 1959, the treatment block was converted into Australia's first psychiatric day hospital.
Montgomery Hall served as an entertainment space where patients and staff gathered for performances and social events, making it an important part of daily life at the facility.
The site sits on elevated terrain in the City of Nedlands with multiple sections spread across the property that can be explored on foot. Wearing comfortable shoes is recommended as pathways traverse the expansive grounds.
The facility was noteworthy for having Montgomery Hall function as Perth's second-largest theatre venue, hosting performances and cultural events. This entertainment role significantly shaped how residents and staff experienced life within the complex.
