WACA Ground, Cricket stadium in East Perth, Australia
WACA Ground is a stadium for cricket and other sports in East Perth that includes several seating areas and function rooms for events. Six light towers of 70 meters each rise above the playing field and enable operation after dark.
The Western Australian Cricket Association founded the ground in 1893 on former swampland and secured a lease until the year 2888. Since 1890 the site has served as the central venue for cricket in Western Australia and welcomed numerous international test matches.
The ground takes its name from the Western Australian Cricket Association, which maintains its headquarters here, and visitors see red brick buildings alongside modern stands. On match days the seats fill with spectators wearing green and gold jerseys who cheer loudly for their team.
Yellow and Red Central Area Transit buses stop near the stadium, and parking is available in nearby City of Perth car parks. On match days it helps to arrive early because streets around the site become busy.
The playing surface develops particularly fast and bouncy characteristics that favor bowlers and make the field known worldwide among cricket players. In the afternoon a sea breeze called the Fremantle Doctor often blows across the field and strengthens this effect.
