Darling Range Hotel, Historic hotel in Bellevue, Western Australia
The Darling Range Hotel sits at the base of Greenmount Hill along the Great Eastern Highway, positioned north of a former railway station. The building was originally designed with balconies that overlooked the Helena Vale Racecourse.
Thomas Wilkins built the establishment in 1905 under the name East Midland Hotel. During World War I, it became a key destination for soldiers stationed at a training camp in the area.
The place was a central gathering point for soldiers who sought refreshment during their time in training nearby. This role made it an important social hub for the local community during that era.
The building now operates as Darling Range Lodge and houses an Indian restaurant inside. Visitors should be aware that the original interior spaces have been adapted for new uses while the exterior structure remains recognizable.
The hotel remained in operation through multiple ownership changes while other historic buildings in the region were destroyed by fires or fell into disrepair. This longevity makes it one of the few surviving structures from that period in the area.
