Railway Reserves Heritage Trail, trail in Shire of Mundaring, Western Australia
The Railway Reserves Heritage Trail is a roughly 59 kilometer path in the Perth Hills that follows an old railway line and runs along abandoned rail formations through various reserves. The route starts at Bellevue and forms a 41 kilometer loop at Mount Helena before continuing another 18 kilometers to Wooroloo Reserve.
The route was built as part of the area's railway infrastructure and shaped transportation and settlement patterns for many years. Still visible today are old tunnels, bridges, and train stations that tell the story of this transportation era.
The trail follows old railway routes and shows how rail transport shaped the growth of towns in the Perth Hills. Walking through the reserves helps you see how communities developed along these connections.
The path is open to walkers, cyclists, and horse riders, with dogs allowed on a lead; access is free except when starting from John Forrest National Park's main car park. The route is well marked with flat to gentle sections, and rest spots, water stations, and toilets are available at various points.
The Swan View Railway Tunnel is a highlight of the walk - a dark, rocky passage you can move through with a flashlight, offering a special experience when crossing it. This historical tunnel showcases the engineering achievement of the original railway line in an impressive way.
