Chippers Leap, Historical granite outcrop at Greenmount Hill, Western Australia
The granite outcrop rises 8 meters above Great Eastern Highway, marking a significant location in Western Australian colonial history.
In 1832, settler John Chipper jumped from this rock to escape an attack by Aboriginal people, running four miles to Governor Stirling's residence.
The site represents the complex relations between European settlers and Aboriginal peoples during the early colonization period of Western Australia.
Located along Great Eastern Highway near the border of Swan View and Greenmount suburbs, the site includes an information plaque about the 1832 event.
The granite formation survived multiple road construction projects since the 1930s, with authorities modifying plans to preserve this historical landmark.
