In October 1942, an Avro Anson aircraft crashed during a training mission of the No 68 Reserve Squadron. Four Royal Australian Air Force servicemen died in the accident.
Local community members gathered materials and built the original memorial shortly after the crash occurred. This effort reflects the close bonds that existed between civilians and military personnel in the region at that time.
The site has concrete paths and handrails that were added in 2013 to make visiting safer and more accessible. Annual memorial services are held at the location, so check ahead to learn when these take place.
The memorial was built using stone from the surrounding region, and the cross was crafted from jarrah wood native to Western Australia. This use of local materials shows how the community chose to connect the memorial to the land itself.
