Millbillillie, Stony meteorite site near Wiluna, Western Australia.
Millbillillie is a meteorite impact site near Wiluna in Western Australia where a stone fell from space in 1960. The recovered material displays a black fusion crust with flow patterns and light gray interior visible through surface fractures.
The meteorite arrived in October 1960, with two station workers witnessing the arrival while opening a gate between two properties. This direct observation made it one of the rare meteorite falls documented by eyewitnesses in real time.
Local Aboriginal people played a key role in finding fragments scattered across the landscape after the initial impact. Their knowledge of the land helped researchers recover more material than would have been possible otherwise.
The main fragments are held at the Western Australian Museum where visitors can view them up close. Plan your visit in advance since the museum has regular hours and the specimens may not always be on public display.
The material originated from Asteroid 4-Vesta and formed through cooling of molten rock on a body far from Earth. This origin offers a rare window into the earliest stages of our solar system's creation.
